Understanding the moissanite carat weight:
The industry has traditionally measured a diamond's weight in carats (1 carat equaling 200 milligrams). Since moissanite gemstones are only slightly less heavy (lighter) than natural diamonds, the size of a natural diamond and moissanite don't differ.
For instance: A 6.50 mm round brilliant natural diamond would have a carat weight of 1.0. A moissanite of the same dimension (6.50mm) would have a carat weight of 0.88. Simply put, the weight of the two stones may be slightly different, but the millimeter size has been cut to stay the same.
In order to fit available settings, it's often easier for jewelers to order moissanite by millimeter. The specific gravity of moissanite is 3.21 grams per cubic centimeter, so a 6.50 mm round brilliant moissanite jewel is approximately 0.88 carats.
